How To Begin My Weight Loss Journey – My story is not an overnight success. I didn’t take the magic pill. My results were not from a fad diet or a product from an infomercial. My journey has been a roller coaster ride of experimentation.

A collection of mistakes, and small milestones along the way, that ultimately outweighed the gains I expected.

I was an unhappy girl with no self-esteem, trapped under baggy t-shirts and stretchy jeans and desperate to lose weight to be normal. I had no idea it would turn into a journey of self-discovery, freedom and finding happiness.

Over the years of trying to lose weight, I have tried many weight loss diets, programs and even some tricks.

I wish I was blogging when I was in all of them, but I tried many of them when I was quite young, so I have no written record of my experiences.

I loved junk food, watching TV and being as lazy as possible, so as appealing as extreme diets were, they never stuck.

Going from soda to lemonade. Then light lemon water, flavored water, fruit infused water and finally plain water.

Every diet or exercise program I’ve tried, I’ve learned something that I’ve carried with me to create a healthy lifestyle that I truly love living.

I was a cute kid. Really, really cute kids (between my two older sisters in the picture below I’m cute)….until 1st grade.

And then I became the fat kid (me on the bottom right in the big blue poncho).

I remember my grandmother once making a comment about how shocked she was that I could eat so many slices of pizza.

I loved junk food and would sneak into the kitchen late at night and find junk food hidden in my mom’s kitchen…and I would eat it all in one sitting.

Whether it was a box of nutty bars, a bag of chips, or some really tasty leftovers, I would gobble them up.

Food (more specifically, junk food) was a precious commodity to me. While it was there, I felt like it was a resource that could run out at any given moment, so I had to eat it up as quickly as possible before someone else dared to try it themselves and leave less for me.

My mother was (and still is) a great cook. She always made a ton of flavorful, healthy, homemade meals, but I never appreciated them.

I’d take a lunchable over a sandwich any day and I could live off donuts, tater tots, and cupcakes.

I distinctly remember someone replacing all water fountains with Kool-Aid fountains (fun fact – I didn’t like plain water until I was 27).

And I retreated further into myself, thinking that if I kept quiet and just flew under the radar, I wouldn’t draw attention to myself and no one would notice that I was fat. ate secretly

Then I beat myself up for overeating, which drove me to eat even more. It really is a vicious cycle that keeps you spiraling downward.

I could never wear the same clothes my friends wore because I couldn’t fit into girls’, or even teenage, clothes. I remember wearing a 24W when I was 14. So, I wore the ever-fashionable stretchy jeans and super baggy t-shirt, trusting that all the extra fabric would hide all my belly rolls.

In middle school, I played volleyball, which helped keep my weight at least somewhat under control.

I was always the slowest, I always finished last, huffing and puffing, requiring tons of walk breaks, even just during warm-up laps. I could block, bump, and spike like nobody’s business, but I remember always feeling second best because I was the girl who had to take the highest number of uniforms because numbers correlated with size.

I played tennis from my freshman to junior year of high school and again, really enjoyed the game, but running was terrible. Our coach was a middle-aged man who could run circles around me. The whole team would have finished their hustle around the field, while I was still stumbling next to the (middle-aged) assistant coach, I’m sure they sent me off for trying to run faster.

In high school, the teasing almost stopped, but I still felt as big as ever. It seemed like everyone around me was dating and I was convinced that if I lost weight, guys would start noticing me.

I’d skip breakfast (always a great way to lose weight – not), I’d make sure everyone could see I was only eating bell pepper strips or half a Slim Fast for lunch instead of the pizza served at the key club meeting. , and I would applaud myself when my stomach was growling with hunger, because, obviously, starvation = weight loss (palate).

But, those efforts were pretty temporary, and the next day, I was eating a giant burrito for lunch at the food court with my friends (and hiding cookies in my bedroom at night).

Because the rec center was across a field from my dorm, there was a time when I would go there twice a day to swim or lift weights or jump on the elliptical, and I was taking full advantage of the salad bar in the cafeteria.

I probably could have lost a lot more weight, but I was still ordering late-night pizza with my dorm-mates and stocking our room’s mini-fridge with cookie dough and soda.

The next year when I moved out of the dorms and off campus (away from the rec center), I slowly started to gain the weight back.

I exercised occasionally and tried to watch what I ate, but I didn’t know how to cook, so I mostly stuck with boxed options.

Macaroni and cheese and hamburger helpers are not ideal foods for weight loss, and they remained after I regained those pounds.

We dated, we got engaged, and then he was deployed, and I was constantly stressed.

I was sad. I thought worry was the only thing I could offer at that time and since I couldn’t control what was happening abroad, I decided to control my eating. I lived alone and for most of that year, I probably ate 500-800 calories a day.

I was very hungry, wasn’t exercising, had no energy, and my stomach was constantly in knots, but I lost 40 pounds, bringing me down to 160. This is the lightest I’ve been since I can remember (literally. I must have been 160 pounds at some point in my life because I was gaining weight, but I have no idea when).

I thought skinny meant healthy, but even though I was eventually a normal weight, I was far from healthy at the time.

Fast food, hardly any exercise because we were glued to our TV and computer screens, and the stress of constant conflict between us was almost unbearable (especially for this people-pleasing, peace-loving girl!), so I started gaining weight. back quickly

I was really comfortable using the elliptical. I was too scared to try any of the suggested classes and the weight machines were just intimidating. Gym people always know what they are doing and I didn’t.

My gym is inadequate, so I spend a lot of time in the cardio movie room, where all the lights are turned off and they project movies on a screen in front of the cardio equipment.

Mostly because I was so weak that I struggled with many of the exercises she gave, and as sweet as this girl is, she constantly expressed how amazed she was at how little I could lift/push/sit/whatever. Even though I was still 55 pounds below my heaviest, I felt completely inadequate and just wanted to hide.
